The top five states for average streaming speeds for both uploads and downloads were on the East Coast, while states with larger rural populations had the slowest average speeds, according to the graphic. The free service measures speed in megabits-per-second Mbps.

Speeds of 40 Mbps or higher are ideal for streaming multiple HD shows or multi-player gaming, but speeds under 20 Mpbs work best for single user streaming and might make downloading apps time consuming for the end user.

They have the widest coverage in California, Texas, New York, and 41 other states and primarily deliver service via Hybrid Fiber-Coaxial infrastructure. One of the defining features of Spectrum when compared to other cable providers is their easy to understand tiered pricing system, which offers the same price for similar plan speeds nationally.

Digital TV and Phone bundles are also available from Spectrum. While network investment and expansion has overall improved the Charter Spectrum network from a user perspective, billing changes from the merger with TWC and Bright House have been problematic for some customers.

This has pros and cons, but the bright side is that the billing is simple to understand, has few fees compared to other cable providers, and is consistent in all Spectrum service areas.

In essence, this means that data on their network travels over fiber lines for most of the journey to subscribers, but switches over to older, cheaper coaxial cable lines for the short distances within neighborhoods. This balance of performance and affordability is what makes cable the most common way American consumers to connect to the Internet.

Think of it as branches in a tree getting smaller as they spread out — if one branch needs more water, the tree might send more to that branch at the expense of other branches.

Internet user growth worldwide With constantly declining smartphone prices and improvements in digital infrastructure, the increasingly connectivity among global online audiences is moving along at a steady pace.

Many previously underserviced regions have begun to profit from mobile online connections, leapfrogging the desktop PC development phase and starting out as mobile-first societies.

The fastest growing online populations based on relative year-on-year user growth include many African nations, led by the Western Sahara where online audiences grew percent annually.

Despite the growing number of internet users in Africa, the continent still lags behind other regions in terms of online adoption. Online usage penetration in all African markets was below the global average of 57 percent.

The highest on the continent was Southern Africa with a penetration rate of 51 percent, Middle Africa was ranked last worldwide. Middle Africa had an online penetration rate of just 12 percent, highlighting the ongoing struggles for connectivity but also the untapped digital potential within Africa.

The inventor of the world wide web was the English scientist Tim Berners-Lee who created a system to share information through a network of computers. This chart shows the share and number of people that are using the Internet, which in these statistics refers to all those who have used the Internet in the last 3 months.

The chart starts instill one year before Berners-Lee released the first web browser and before the very first website was online the site of CERN, which is still online. At that time very few computers around the world were connected to a network; estimates for suggest that only half of a percent of the world population were online.

As the chart shows, this started to change in the s, at least in some parts of the world: By the year almost half of the population in the US was accessing information through the internet. At the other end of the spectrum, there are still countries where almost nothing has changed since But the overarching trend globally — and, as the chart shows, in all world regions — is clear: more and more people are online every year.

The speed with which the world is changing is incredibly fast. On any day in the last 5 years there were on averagepeople online for the first time. For those who are online most days it is easy to forget how young the internet still is. The timeline below the chart reminds you how recent websites and technologies became available that are integrated to the everyday lives of millions: In the s there was no Wikipedia, Twitter launched inand Our World in Data is only 4 years old and look how many people have joined since then 4.

And while many of us cannot imagine their lives without the services that the internet provides, the key message for me from this overview of the global history of the internet is that we are still in the very early stages of the internet.

It was only in that half of the world population was online; and in it is therefore still the case that close to half of the world population is not using the internet.

The internet has already changed the world, but the big changes that the Internet will bring still lie ahead and its history has just begun.

Global Map of the Internet

The map shows the share of the population that is accessing the internet for all countries of the world. Internet users are individuals who have used the Internet from any location in the last 3 months. The Internet can be used via a computer, mobile phone, personal digital assistant, games machine, digital TV etc. In richer countries more than two thirds of the population are typically online.

And although usage rates are much lower in the developing world, they are increasing. The internet has been one of our most transformative and fast-growing technologies. Globally the number of internet users increased from only million in to over 3. The one billion barrier was crossed in Every day over the past five years, an average ofpeople went online for the first time. But how many people from each country are online?

China and India take the top two slots despite having only 50 and 26 percent onlinerespectively. A chart of the top 10 countries is here. Clicking on any country in map shows how its users have changed over time. Means of connection include cable modem, DSL, fiber-to-the-home, other fixed wired -broadband subscriptions, satellite broadband and terrestrial fixed wireless broadband. Excluded are subscriptions via mobile-cellular networks.

A truly disruptive technological development has been the rise of mobile phones. The interactive visualization shows the latest global data. By changing to the chart view you can see that globally we only saw a very slow rise until the late s and then a dramatically faster increase in mobile device subscriptions since the beginning of the 21st century.

Facebook, the largest social media platform in the world, has 2. Other social media platforms including Youtube and Whatsapp also have more than one billion users each. These numbers are huge — there are 7. This means social media platforms are used by one-in-three people in the world, and more than two-thirds of all internet users.

Social media has changed the world. The rapid and vast adoption of these technologies is changing how we find partnershow we access information from the newsand how we organize to demand political change. Who uses social media? But in other situations, a minute can also be quite extraordinary. Imagine being a quarterback in the Superbowl in overtime, or finding yourself in a life-and-death situation in which every second counts towards the outcome.

When it comes to gauging the epic scale of the internet, it would seem that each minute leans closer to the extraordinary side of the spectrum. How is it possible that millions of emails are sent every minute? How does Google process 3. Platforms such as Instagram and Netflix continue to grow at a blistering pace, while new categories such as smart speakers are quickly building a strong foundation for the future.

Last year, for example, only 67 voice-first devices were being shipped per minute — and inthere are now smart speakers being shipped in the same window of time. Interestingly, even as more and more people gain access to the internet around the world each year, there are still parts of the web that are plateauing or even shrinking in size.

Further, the amount of emails getting sent is also quite stagnant, likely thanks to to the rise of workplace collaboration tools such as Slack. Snap is another story altogether. Get your mind blown on a daily basis:.

Video games generate billions in revenue every year. Where the majority of this revenue comes from, however, may be surprising to you. While this feat is impressive on its own, the way many of these franchises generate their revenue may come as a shock.

As arcades popped up across America, renowned classics like Pac-man and Space Invaders raked in large sums of money, one coin at a time. Today, there are two revenue models generally followed by video game publishers—the traditional pay-to-play P2P model, and the newer free-to-play F2P model.

A developer incurs costs to produce its games, so it sells them to consumers to recover costs and make a profit.

Under a F2P model, however, the developer essentially distributes its games for free. So why would a developer ever choose a F2P model? Source: SuperData. Because these types of games are often published for PC or mobile phone most people have at least one of thesetheir accessibility becomes a key advantage. You can read more about us on our mission page. Due to the well-documented limitations of this dataset, we have also leveraged our own extensive database of information given to us by internet providers directly or retrieved from publicly available resources, including more granular availability and pricing information.

There are many well-documented challenges underpinning the ongoing effort to accurately map broadband availability. We would love your support in improving this map — please send us your suggestions using the contact form at the bottom of this page. Providers that would like to offer us more granular information can contact our team directly as well. Form is currently the primary reporting tool that the FCC uses in order to determine where providers offer their services in the United States.

Providers are required to report their coverage information using Form twice a year. That said, it remains the most comprehensive raw look into the state of broadband deployment in America today. The map above is our attempt to improve upon this baseline.

It is important to note that this metric has changed in the pastand it will likely change again, as the standards and technology that make up the internet continue to grow and evolve. The U. For over two decades, various U. Much like the government was able to bring electricity -- and later telephony -- to rural parts of America, these programs effectively offer carrots to telecommunications companies to spur them to build out expensive broadband infrastructure in areas where it would be cost-prohibitive to do so otherwise.

Another 14 million lack access to any fixed broadband service whatsoever. In recent years, the FCC has claimed rural broadband as a top priority. In AprilFCC Chairman Ajit Pai announced a new fund to support the buildout of gigabit-speed broadband services to rural residents.

The DLT grants are not specifically for broadband deployments, but instead fund equipment and software for telemedicine and distance learning applications. The RUS broadband funds are supplied by the Farm bill, which is reauthorized every five years, and the annual appropriations bill. This program provides loans and loan guarantees to telephone companies and cooperatives, municipalities, tribes and nonprofit organizations to deploy telecommunications infrastructure for broadband service in rural communities.

Eligibility is limited to rural communities in U. The RUS is prohibited from prioritizing one technology over others in broadband loan applications. However, the RUS does have some latitude in setting a minimum data speed for broadband projects under the loan program. That speed is currently set at 10 Mbps downstream and 1 Mbps upstream. These grants provide funding for broadband services through one-time grants to tribes, cooperatives, universities and private companies.

The money is used to build broadband infrastructure that can further community development and improvement. The funds can be used to support construction, acquisition and spectrum acquisitionand leasing of facilities needed to deploy broadband services to critical community facilities, and to offer broadband service to residents and business within the proposed service area.

Rural areas are eligible only if they lack any existing broadband speed of at least 10 Mbps downstream and 1 Mbps upstream. Established inthe ReConnect program provides loans and grants to help cover the costs of constructing, improving or acquiring facilities for broadband service in eligible rural areas. This program offers long-term guaranteed loans to qualified telephone companies or cooperatives, nonprofits, limited dividend associations, mutual associations or public bodies for the purpose of providing telecommunications services in rural areas.

Eligible rural areas must not be contained within the boundaries of any incorporated or unincorporated city, village or borough with a population exceeding 5, residents.

Applications are accepted year round and are not competitive.

These offer loans and grants to rural community facilities such as schools, tribal offices, libraries and hospitals for specialized telecommunications systems that can support healthcare and educational applications in rural areas.

These funds are only available to organizations that currently deliver or propose to deliver distance learning or telemedicine services. The fund supports eligible telecommunications companies ETCs in deploying broadband services in underserved or unserved areas within the U.

Loans and grants disbursed through the Universal Service Fund are paid for by contributions from wireline, wireless and cable telecommunications companies based on their revenues, who then pass those costs onto their subscribers.
